All about the GitHub Expert Program, and How you can become one!

When we talk about community, then the first thing that would come to anyone’s mind will be the GitHub Campus Expert program. Literally!

✨ About the Program

The GitHub Campus Expert program is a great way to help your local community. As part of the program, you will build and grow your local community. Unlike other ambassador programs, this one emphasises helping you build a community by supporting you.

✨ Who are the Campus Experts

Campus Experts are student leaders who are passionate about leading tech communities on their campuses. For students to learn, build, and grow collaboratively, they work to create safe, diverse, and inclusive learning environments.

With GitHub's training and support, Campus Experts improve their campus' technical community. When you complete the training and become a GitHub Campus Expert, you will have access to resources and support from GitHub, including swag, sponsorship, and opportunities to attend events such as the company's annual conference, GitHub Universe.

They create new opportunities for students to learn valuable skills by bridging the gap between industry and academia. Campus Experts can be found leading countless initiatives for their communities, including workshops, meetups, hackathons, and more.

✨ Eligibility Criteria

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Validate your student status through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary formal education institution.
  • Have more than one year left as a student before graduating.
  • Be a GitHub user for at least six months.
  • Not be enrolled in the GitHub Campus Advisors Program.

✨ Application Process

The application process for the program takes place twice a year, once in February and again in August.

Campus Experts come from all over the world, but during my tenure, only 88 were selected, and I was one of them.

First round-Application round

In this you will be asked three questions about you, your community, what you have done, and how you make everyone feel equal. For this you get a full month to submit the application, and within weeks you will get to know if you are shortlisted or not.

Second round- Video Resume round

Upon acceptance, you'll be invited to submit a 5-minute video introducing yourself and your community. In which you have to explain your motivations, goals, and community vision.

The video must be submitted within two weeks of receiving the invitation. After your video has been submitted, we’ll take about a week to review it. You will be invited to join the GitHub Campus Experts Training if the program is a good fit for you.

✨ Training

If your submission was approved, Congratulations! You’ve been accepted to the program. You will be trained by the GitHub Campus Experts team. This training consists of six modules that take 12 hours to complete over the course of six weeks.

Upon completion of your training, you'll submit a community proposal that will serve as a guideline for your community and you'll officially become a GitHub Campus Expert.

The best part? You will also receive the GitHub Swags :")

✨ GitHub Campus Expert Experience

The opportunity to be a part of this program is one of the biggest accomplishments in my life, as I am the first and only GCE from my state. The number of opportunities I have received as a member of this program is unimaginable.

As a Campus Expert, you gain access to tools that help you make resource requests, and collaborate with GitHub Staff and other Campus Experts.

I truly believe that I am where I am today because of this program. I have been able to work so closely with GitHub, organizing the first GitHub Field Day in India, and being able to meet and network with such amazing people.

Lastly, I am able to give back to my local community in any way that I can with GitHub's support.
